Emigrants Johannes and Peter Paul

The two brothers Johannes and Peter Paul were born in Niedersalbach/Saarland and then lived in Obersalbach.

Niedersalbach was disputed between Lorraine and Nassau-Saarbrücken. In 1766 it came to Nassau-Saarbrücken as part of an exchange.

Obersalbach belonged to the dominion of Kriechingen-Püttlingen and came to Nassau-Saarbrücken in 1778.

Emigration to Galicia and settlement there

The brothers Peter and Johann Paul emigrated with their families to Galicia together with their cousin Nikolaus Dirk. The living conditions in Saarland and the course of this emigration from Saarland to Krasna correspond to those of Nikolaus Dirk. You can read about them under his name.

The PAUL brothers were registered together with Nikolaus TÜRK on July 10, 1784 in Vienna¹.

Note:
In WK¹ the numbers of people between Johann and Peter seem to have been swapped.

Like Nikolaus Dirk, both families were settled as private settlers in Huszka near Sitaniec in the district of Zamosc².

Onward migration to Russia

Family members of the Paul clan born in Galicia - like Nikolaus Dirk * 1769- migrated on to Krasna in Bessarabia in 1814.

Hopf's (Krakow) list of emigration from Poland (Duchy of Warsaw) to Russia³ mentions the following Paul:

His age was estimated on the basis of the following sources, because church register entries from Sitaniec are not available for the period in question:

• In the church register there is an entry about Johann Paul (26), who was godfather to Anna Paul * July 16, 1814. Note: This Anna Paul is the daughter of Peter Paul & Margaretha née Trenz).
• Paul, Johann from the district of Hrubieszow, Lublin Governorate, Duchy of Warsaw, emigrated to Russia in 1814; he was single.
• Sick people in Krasna in 1819: Documents in archives in Russia: List of sick colonists in the colony of Krasna in 1819: John Paul, 31 years old, was ill on September 19.

Document from the State Archives of the Odessa Oblast, Odessa, Ukraine; fond no. 6, inventory no. 1, file no. 1398.The document states that Nikolaus Oberling (Oberlyn) and his wife Juliana, together with Johann Paul and his wife Elisabetha and their daughters Gertruda and Margaretha, asked to be allowed to leave Krasna and return to the Zamosc district in Poland. Their application was accompanied by a declaration from the Committee for Foreign Settlers in Southern Russia, according to which they would have to repay part of their accumulated savings to the government in accordance with Tsar Alexander's decree of 1801. The application was submitted on November 5, 1820.

Although it is not clear from the other documents in this group that they were allowed to return to Poland, the tone of the documents suggests that they did leave the country.

The documents in Krasna confirm this assumption.
There are no further references for Johann Paul, his wife and their two daughters, e.g. baptisms, marriages, death dates.
The picture is the same for the Oberlyn family.
