Individual Report

Wagner

The Wagner clan is one of the largest families in Krasna.

Georg Wagner, the oldest known wainwright in Krasna, emigrated with his family to South Prussia around 1800. He most probably came from Nassau territory or neighboring areas.

There were several Wagner emigrants to South Prussia from this area at this time, but only three were married and of suitable age, only two of them with two children or more, only one Georg.

It was Georg Ludwig? Wagner, Erbach, Kirberg district, 35 yrs. wife and 6 children (Dokument 172/2677 # 534)

This Erbach lies near Hünfelden in the Taunus; (Erbach before 1802 Kurtrier and Nassau-Oranien, joint office Camberg1).

Georg Wagner was therefore born around 1763. His wife could have been Margaretha Eisler, who is named with two children in Orzechowo.

They probably married between 1783 and 1785 after the birth of the presumably eldest children.

So far it has not been possible to find birth/marriage dates in the region of origin of Georg's family

The family was settled in Orzechowo near Wreschen and was registered in 1814 together with the traveling schoolteachers Müller and Becker (seeThe hiking instructors Mathias Müller and Peter Becker) moved on to Krasna.

Georg Wagner was a schoolmaster in Orzechowo around 1808. Together with other colonists, he asked for the payments to the administration to be postponed. In his justification, he stated that he had recently married two children and therefore had high costs. The names of the children are not mentioned. They could be Johannes and Joseph Wagner, to whom one child each was born in Orzechowo in 1804 and 1805.

Georg Wagner is mentioned twice in the church register of Orzechowo:

Georg Wagner Sr. came to Krasna with his second wife Rosina Jakob and died soon after 1820.

Further evidence:

Despite this evidence and circumstantial evidence, we have a problem that has not yet been fully resolved:

There is a church register entry in the Orzechowo church register according to which Adalbert Wagner is said to have married Rosina Jakob in 1808. (Catholic Parish Czeszewo (Wrzesnia) Entry 2 / 1808 (24. Januar 1808) Adalbertus Wagner ⚭ Rosina Jakob).

This entry raises questions:

There is some evidence that Georg Wagner, born in 1763, and his two wives are the parents of most of the Wagner family in Krasna who were born before 1814:

First marriage: Georg Wagner to Margaretha Eisler

Born in Germany:

Born in Orzechowo:4

Second marriage: Georg Wagner with Rosina Jakob

Born in Orzechowo:

Born in Krasna:

  2. FILES: Documents loc in Archives in Russia; 1819 sick colonists, in the colony of Krasna; a copy in poss of Ted Becker, AGE: 52, sick Aug 10.
  3. Anton also came to Krasna; he had a son there in 1826.
  4. Two Wagner children are mentioned in Krasna who do not appear in the Orzechowo church register:
    • Peter * around 1802? (age only estimated from year of birth of first child * 1824). There is no evidence of the birth of a Wagner child in Orzechowo in 1802.
The couple Peter Wagner ⚭ with Barbara Erker occurs in Krasna; no Wagner persons are godparents of his children.
    • Dorothea * abt 1808
There is no information about her in Krasna apart from the name and age details in the 1835 census. The name does not appear in the church register in Orzechowo either. It cannot be completely ruled out that it is Rosina, born in 1809.
